Which Weight Loss Pill Is Right for Me?

How to pick the Weight Loss Pill that's best suited to you.

There are literally thousands of weight loss pills on the market, many of which are a total waste of money. Produced cheap, with poor ingredients, fancy packaging and crazy claims, 'Lose 15kg in a week!'. Don't waste your money

When taking a fat loss pill, you really need to be taking the right type for your needs or you're wasting your money, so I've compiled this simple guide based on the most common questions I get asked about weight loss tablets.

The most popular classes of fat loss pills are:

- Thermogenic Fat Burners
- Stimulant Free Fat Burners
- Appetite Suppressants
- Thyroid Hormone Increasers
- Carbohydrate Blockers
- Fat Blockers
- Diuretics (not strictly a fat loss pill, but a weight loss pill)

All fat loss pills should be taken in conjunction with a healthy eating plan and regular exercise. Eating vast amounts of food and taking a fat loss pill will do the body no good, and weight loss will be non-existent.

Thermogenic fat burners - This is probably the most popular and effective type of fat loss pill. They work by increasing the metabolic rate of the body so you will burn more calories - even when resting. Studies have shown thermogenics to be most effective up to 6 weeks, after that their effect can start to wear off, so it is recommended to use thermogenics for 6 weeks and then have a few weeks off before starting again. This stops the body adapting to their effect and maintains their effectiveness. Thermogenics contain stimulants such as caffeine, so if you are sensitive to these it's best to use another type of fat burner.

Stimulant Free Fat Burners - If you want to stay away from stimulants, this is the class for you. In recent years stimulant free fat burners have improved dramatically in quality and efficacy. They work on the same methods as regular fat burners but use mainly herbal methods to increase metabolism. Their results are not as dramatic as regular fat burners but users are still expected to see a regular steady fat loss.

Appetite Suppressants - Many people are overweight due to eating too much, even if you consume a healthy diet, you just cannot say 'no', and consume too much food. Thus eating less food would reduce your weight, but when you are so used to eating what you want, changing these eating patterns feels nigh on impossible. This is where appetite suppressants can be successful.

Thyroid Hormone Increasers - These fat loss pills work by activating the part of the thyroid responsible for metabolism within the body. Popular thyroid enhancing ingredients are guggulsterones and forskolin. Thyroid regulators can work great in tandem with a healthy diet and exercise regime.

Carbohydrate Blockers - Even though Carb blockers can be used alone they are often used in conjunction with other fat loss pills. They work by stopping carbs being metabolised into glucose and fat, thus stopping their absorption. White kidney bean is the active ingredient for most carb blockers as it interferes with the enzyme that splits carbohydrates so they are not converted into fat in the body.

Fat Blockers - The active ingredient of fat blockers - Chitosan is known as a 'fat magnet'. Fat blockers work by creating a gel fluid around fats in the stomach, the fat then becomes too big for your body to absorb so it's excreted through the gastric system. So in theory you can still eat what you want but less fat will be absorbed by the body. Remember fat blockers are only effective if you have a diet that is high in dietary fat. If you are following a low fat diet their effect will be negligible.

Diuretics - Diuretics are not actually a fat burner, but that can work to aid your weight loss. Diuretics work by ridding the body of excess water, and people with a diet high in salt tend to have a lot of excess water stored in the body. They will strip water weight from your body but will NOT burn any fat. Long term use is not recommended, but they are useful for a weight loss 'kick-start' or a 'quick fix' such as a wedding, photo shoot, etc.
